Case Study : The automated system includes a PC with running WinCC (the software offered by Siemens for controlling and monitoring an automated system) to control and gather relevant information from the entire system. The WinCC shows appropriate data in particular screens designed so that it cannot be edited for any report generation purposes. The customer required a report for several areas such as (Trough data, Weighing data, Dryer data..etc) which the data available in different screens and the report must be in MS Excel file as they can use it for calculations, reporting and decision making purposes.

Solution : The exchange of data between the WinCC OPC Server (a solution to make available the automated system’s process data for multiple PCs) and the WinCC OPC Client is carried out by WinCC tags (variable names which correspond to apecific addresses on PLC). Via the OPC channel (software communication link), the WinCC OPC Server enables the access to WinCC tag values. WinCC can be used as the OPC Server and as the OPC Client. The Data Capturer acting as an 'OPC' client to get required tag values for the generation of customized reports. OPC Data Capturer includes a viewer for online data for corresponding tags, report generation to MS Excel file.
